When I was a child with wide eyes I watched Grace Kelly who in all her grace, determined and bold, drove her convertible at full speed along the winding roads of the Côte d'Azur. Beside her sat a terrified Cary Grant, who could not enjoy the sea and the wonderful panorama that opened before him.
I didn't have a sapphire blue Sunbeam Alpine 1954 spider at the time. I owned a rickety Polo, but I had one thing: the most beautiful road in the world, which could hold up, if not overcome, the comparison with the streets of Nice and Monte Carlo.
The Road in the Rock: the Gardesana
So on nice days, when I had a free moment, with a blouse and skirt with a slightly vintage touch (I really wanted to put myself in the shoes of one of my favorite actresses and especially in her wardrobe!), I would get behind the wheel of my Polo and whiz by along the Western Gardesana, the Road in the Rock.
Winding and sinuous at the same time, a whole tight curve after another, a gallery and a balcony overlooking the lake, with the steep mountains just above my head, has always been a road of enchantment and thrill for me. Even today, when I walk along it, my heart leaps: the panorama appears and disappears between one gallery and another, the historic houses, with their frescoes and their secrets emerge along the way, the cypresses guarding the sky and the lake shines with gold and blue.
On Lake Garda at the wheel of a vintage spider, a dream comes true!
Unlike then, however, I realized my dream. No, I didn't get engaged to a modern Cary Grant: I got behind the wheel of a vintage spider and drove around the lake, like an old-time star. It was beautiful. A unique experience and now I would really like to give you the chance to realize a little dream, a journey through time.
How?
We have thought of a special experience: in addition to enjoying the beauty of our lake, you will find under the window of your room a real spider from the past, such as the red Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider or Triumph Spitfire that can be yours for half a day or all day.
You will be able to leave at 9:00 in the morning and return at 19:00 in the evening, just in time for dinner.
Where to go?
I tell you a secret: my favorite tour of Lake Garda starts right from the western Garda area. The most spectacular stretch is certainly the one from Gardone to Riva, where the natural scenery, interspersed with tunnels dug into the rock, is truly unforgettable. Around every bend you will discover stately mansions or sleepy villages perched on the rock walls. To reach Gardone, once you arrive in Padenghe, turn off at Soiano, Polpenazze and Puegnago, thus crossing a series of small villages, vineyards and olive groves, which will take you to Salò.
Proceed to Gardone, Gargnano and Limone.
Once you arrive in Riva proceed to Malcesine, Torri, Lazise and Peschiera. Here the coast is softer, but equally dotted with lush and poetic views between vineyards and villages.
